Background

Interactive Museum Exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum

This interactive museum exhibit was developed for the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) as part of the Teck Suite of Galleries: Earth's Treasures. The installation features a multi-user interactive touch wall that allows visitors to explore the connection between mining, minerals, and everyday objects. By linking familiar products to the minerals used to create them, the exhibit helps visitors better understand how natural resources shape modern technology and daily life.

Vision

Exploring Minerals in Everyday Life

From rocks to smartphones and everything in between, minerals and mining play a crucial role in modern life. The goal of this interactive museum exhibit is to help visitors understand how minerals, objects, and mining are interconnected. Visitors can explore the minerals required to produce specific objects and then discover other everyday products that rely on those same materials.

Approach

Designing an Interactive Multi-user Touch Wall

The multi-screen interactive touch wall presents a continuous flow of objects and minerals, allowing multiple visitors to explore the relationship between everyday items such as smartphones and batteries and the minerals used to create them. Through intuitive touch interaction, high-resolution imagery, and responsive visual feedback, the installation encourages exploration and discovery. This interactive exhibit design blends educational content with playful interaction, helping visitors better understand the role minerals play in modern life.

RESULTS

An Educational Resource and Visitor Attraction

The interactive touch wall in the Teck Suite of Galleries attracts visitors of all ages with its engaging and informative content. By connecting minerals to familiar objects, the interactive museum exhibit helps visitors better understand the role natural resources play in everyday technology and daily life. The installation demonstrates how interactive exhibit design and digital media can enhance museum storytelling and support deeper visitor engagement
